About JD Hopper
After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill two years early, JD Hopper seemed set for a career in financial consulting. But after landing his dream job, he quickly realized it was not the life he wanted and walked away after just 26 days.
That decision launched a deeper search for meaning. Over the years, JD came to realize that true joy is found in serving others, whatever form that takes. Today, he is a successful entrepreneur, public speaker, and educator.
JD is the founder of Purpose Tutoring, a thriving tutoring company he grew from a solo practice into a team of tutors who support students nationally across a wide range of subjects.
Purpose Tutoring's mission is to help students become irreplaceable in a world that is increasingly trying to replace human intelligence. JD believes that when students learn to think clearly, solve problems independently, and trust their own minds, better grades, higher test scores, and stronger college opportunities follow as a natural result.
As part of his own tutoring practice, JD works with students in advanced calculus, SAT and ACT prep, and college admissions. His team supports students in K-12 math, science, English, foreign languages, study skills, SAT/ACT prep, college admissions, and more.
Since expanding Purpose Tutoring into a multi-tutor practice, JD has dedicated more of his energy to growing the company into a successful enterprise that allows him to support himself, pay his tutors well above market rate, and deliver an exceptional experience to every client.
One of JD's core business philosophies is that paying people well is both the right thing to do and a smart business strategy. When tutors are well compensated, they are happier, more motivated, and more invested in doing excellent work. That leads to better tutoring, happier clients, more repeat bookings, and a stronger business for everyone involved.
Public Speaking
JD is a passionate and highly engaged public speaker. He served a one-year term as president of Queen City Toastmasters, a public speaking club that, under his leadership, grew into the largest public speaking club in the Carolinas, reaching more than 70 active members.
During his presidency, the club experienced unprecedented competitive success, finishing the contest season with a perfect 8-0 record. Queen City Toastmasters won first place in both the District impromptu speaking championship and the prepared speech championship, outlasting 87 other clubs. The club is currently awaiting confirmation to proceed to the World Championship semifinals in Vancouver.
Through his speeches, JD inspires audiences to think deeply, lead courageously, and find their own path. He is known for drawing from his personal story, connecting naturally with listeners, and creating an energetic sense of engagement in the room.
